February 19, 2026 -- The Invisible Shield, a remarkable four-part documentary series, is essential viewing for every American. If you haven't yet seen it, go watch it now!

It was released on March 26, 2024. It reminds us that public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private communities and individuals." (Winslow, 1957) That's a mouthful... but we ignore, denigrate and underfund it at our peril.

Unlike conventional medicine and its heroic measures and inventions that save lives one at a time, public health is largely invisible yet has done more -- far more -- to give us -- entire populations -- the health and longevity we mostly take for granted. Thanks to the efforts of countless unsung public health heroes over the last century and a half, average lifespans have doubled. Medicine gives us years of life; public health gives us decades. How? Through these and more:

  1. Vaccines
  2. Quarantines
  3. Clean water, clean air
  4. Public safety and education
  5. Convenient, accessible health services
  6. Safe products, especially cars
  7. Maternal and infant health
  8. Safe food

It is shocking that in our country today, public health is politicized. That is, politicians are putting their careers above our health. Such actions as ostracizing Dr. Anthony Fauci -- a modern hero -- and pervasive attacks on and underfunding of public health systems are unacceptable.

Americans, you have only your health and lives to lose. Watch this series, learn, and thrive.
